ADAPT’s SitStrong Program is designed with shoulder health in mind – a comprehensive chair-based approach to building Range of Motion, Endurance and Strength in the upper body and spine. Dissecting the interactions of the spine, scapula, shoulder and elbow, we look at the relationships between these structures and how they influence our daily movements. Each 4-week cycle of sessions builds upon itself, establishing a baseline of movement and then increasing the demand to impact the strength and endurance of the movement. The progressive nature of this program will establish resiliency and allow each individual to perform more in their day-to-day life.


Although this program is chair-based, and predominantly focused on wheelchair users, anyone can benefit from these sessions. The increased body awareness and strength components that are tied into this program can be as challenging as you want to make it! Whether you are an individual with a higher level of neurological impact or an able-bodied individual that wants to work on truly building a durable and strong upper body, this program is for you!

What you’ll need:


  • Approximately 6’ x 6’ space
  • If you have minimal to no grip, we recommend 1 pair of adjustable velcro wrist weights (adjusts 0-5 lbs)
  • If you have grip, we recommend 1-2 sets of dumbbells (2-10 lbs) OR household items as listed:
  • ​1 lb - 16 oz can of food
  • ​2 - 3 lbs - bottle of wine
  • ​4 - 5 lbs - a small bag of potatoes or a medium bag of rice

The SitStrong Program is most suitable for those with:

  • With no current upper body injuries
  • ​Limited core stability and weakness
  • ​Require no assistance to lift both arms in various directions:
       - Out to your side

       - Across body

       - In front of body

       - Overhead
